CONNEAUTVILLE — Officials with the National Weather Service in Cleveland said an EF-2 tornado, packing winds of 115 mph, tore through an area near Conneautville on Tuesday afternoon, striking an elder care facility, bringing down trees and severing power to some residents of Crawford County.
Rolling Fields Elder Care Community said it was aware of no serious injuries on its property. Two minor injuries were reported and those people were transported to Meadville Medical Center, according to Deputy Chief Paul Chason of the Fellows Club Volunteer Fire Department in Conneautville.
The Crawford County Department of Public Safety said the main facility and an assisted-living villa on the property were damaged.
The American Red Cross opened a reception center for the 180-bed elder care facility’s 162 residents at Conneaut Valley Middle School.
A National Weather Service damage-assessment team classified the tornado as an EF-2, whose wind classification ranges from 111 mph to 135 mph, said Patrick Saunders, a meteorologist with the weather service.
“We had employees driving through that area, and we have our suspicions that more tornadoes happened,” Saunders said. “We’ll be sending out additional survey teams on Wednesday morning. We’ll try and figure out where it started and ended. We received photos and videos of tornadoes in different areas. We’ll survey all of those areas, find damage and see if it is associated with a tornado.”
